Excursion to Mont Adventure Equipment Review
1. List three things you learned from the excursion.
- Why the pricing of sportswear is so expensive
- The amount of work that goes into creating a garment e.g. seam sealing for waterproofing, correct volume of down within a sleeping bag.
- Trials and error (the design process) plays a major role in garment creation e.g. adjusting a hip support strap on a backpack.
2. Why are Mont products more expensive than some other brands of adventure
equipment?
Mont adventure equipment appears to be more expensive than other brands because of the amount of work inputted within their garments. They are an independent, yet small, town-based company with only a limited team of staff. Additionally, they make a majority of their garments themselves, rather than using an overseas team to bulk-produce.
3. Describe what the following designers would do if they worked for Mont?
Fashion Designer: Designing a garment suitable for wear. E.g. including zips in jackets were needed and choosing a suitable colour and style.
Industrial Designer: Ensuring the designs made are suitable for their purpose using different techniques and materials e.g. waterproofing for rain jackets using a suitable membrane and Hydronaute™ fabric technology for sleeping bags. They may introduce a new adjustment that needs to be made from the fashion designer’s original design and improve structures.
Graphic Designer: Deciding where to put the ‘Mont’ logo and specifying other prints needing to be made. They may also do advertising (posters, brochures etc.) and creating/maintaining a website.
4. If you were a designer for Mont, what new product, idea or innovation would you introduce?
If I were a designer for Mont, I might introduce a new take on their sportswear - adapting a clothing line to make it appeal similar to the current trends, yet still allow it to have the same functions it must have. For example, trying a range of new fabrics (possibly with a pattern or metallic effect) for the women’s line and adding extra detailing, such as prints and logo designs, for a sleeping bag/backpack.
